The sun shone on the historic Whitney Field at Saratoga Polo Association on Sunday for the Whitney Cup, with Brookland Plantation and Buckleigh Farms battling it out to see who would hoist the famous Whitney Cup Trophy. Jim Zappone from Zappone Chrysler did the ceremonial bowl in and spectators decked out in sundresses and fascinators were treated to an exciting match as Will Orthwein and Peter Bibeau played hard for Buckleigh Farms against Dave Peters and Vincent Mesker from Brookland Plantation. Tab Orthwein and Lael Peters cheered on the players and we chatted with Fran Dingeman and her daughter Ashley, James and Shane Williams-Ness, there with their adorable daughter, Rick Partyka, his daughter Cassandra and Justin Jordan, and Tamie Ehinger. We got a chance to chat with Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson. Marylou told us how Prince Charles had once drank champagne from the Whitney Cup Trophy and delighted us with a story of friends of her who met and fell in love while stomping divots on Whitney Field. In the end it was Brookland Plantation who was victorious after a very close 10-9 match. Marylou presented the trophy to the winners, and spectators celebrated inside the clubhouse with some great music by The Spurs USA.
